St Edith Stein
St Edith Stein was born on October 12 1891 in Wroclaw, Poland. She was a brilliant writer and philosopher and an influential woman and continues to influence the philosophical and intellectual world today. She converted from Judaism to Catholicism; however the Nazis arrested all Catholics of Jewish extraction in Holland. Edith was taken from the Echt Carmel in 1942, and transported by cattle train to the death camp of Auschwitz and died in the gas chambers. St Edith Stein shares very similar qualities and experiences as St Teresa. They are both women for God and were seeking the truth in the church. To begin with, one major quality they share is that they both are great woman who had an influence at their times and still influences us today. They are both of many other people who contribute to gender equality today and are the reason we as women in the 21st century have so many lucky opportunities such as education, freedom and are able to follow our visions. They still remain a great influence today and the feminists and women rights leaders can look back to and be inspired to change the world like they did. Also, as women they both challenged the society they lived in and did it in a time where only men could do this. |
In addition, St Teresa and St Edith Stein both changed and challenged the society they lived in. St Teresa challenged and reformed the Carmelites way of life while St Edith Stein fought for women’s rights and was a brilliant writer, changing the way of people’s philosophy.
They also shared many of the same things, as they were both Discalced Carmelite nuns and St Edith Stein was inspired by St Teresa’s writings. They also both share a love and brilliancy of writing. St Teresa wrote many books in which St Edith was inspired by and she was also a great writer during the 1900’s.
Therefore, St Teresa of Avila and St Edith Stein shared many qualities, changing the society they lived in and leaving a great legacy for women today.
