Short and Long term impact on the world
St Teresa left an impact on the society during her time but an even a more significant impact long term, still influencing us today. She was an active reformer improving the Catholic Church’s way of life, a woman changing her society and her books all left an impact on the world both short term and long term.
Firstly, her first achievement that had an impact both short term and long term was the reformation of the Discalced Carmelites. The short term effect included that she tried to focus the order back to prayer and the primitive rule and living simply and inspired other nuns to do the same. She restored the austerity and devotion of earlier times as the church had become corrupted. St Teresa established many convents and she inspired others to follow her and focus on contemplative prayer. With the reformation of the Carmelites, she helped make the church less corrupt and although at the time it wouldn’t have seemed a lot, other people were inspired by her and did the same so the church would eventually not be corrupt. She struggled against the popular culture of her time, with its self-indulgence, and luxuries and outbursts of cruel punishment. The Long term impact of the reformation is evident as the Discalced Carmelites are still and order today and are throughout Australia and the world. Also, it has many retreat centres around Australia including Varroville and Loreto goes there for retreat. Her work reforming the Discalced Carmelites and the church and setting out a path for people to live a life of prayer resulted in becoming a doctor of the church in 1970, one of only three women to do so.

Additionally, being a woman during her time impacted her short term effect as it was not normal for women to reform and change society and it had a significant impact on our world today. St Teresa short term effect meant she struggled against the society of her time where men could only do such things like reforming the church. In order to be successful St Teresa had to establish monasteries for men. Although at this time, the impact was relatively small because it was still unusual for women to make change however it was a start of women becoming more powerful and was a closer step to getting gender equality. The long term effect of this achievement meant it has helped gender equality today and the rights women have today. We are so lucky to have had people like St Teresa doing great things as a woman. Can you imagine a life where you didn’t get an education, had to stay home, clean and cook and had no choice or freedom in your life or future? You can thank St Teresa for that! She is the inspiration of many women today trying to make a difference or change the world. Today we have found her an extraordinarily capable feminine figure, a woman who, in the 16th century, lived with the freedom and self-directedness that otherwise only men could enjoy, and led and influenced others, both men and women
Finally, St Teresa’s third achievement was her writings and books that were both guidance and inspiration. Her books were about her travels, reformation and establishment of convents. At the time they were guidance for the other nuns and monks to follow a simple life of contemplative prayer. The long term impact of these books teaches us about her life, work, struggle, faith and prayer and it inspires people today. For example, St Edith Stein was inspired by St Teresa’s autobiography and converted from Judaism to Catholicism and was seeking for truth. Also because St Edith was inspired by St Teresa’s books, she also contributed to the great life we have today as women. Furthermore, St Teresa’s quotes from her books are things we can take into our own life so we can become better people and people for God.
